Call for Admission: Graduate Entry Medical Program (GEMP) 2025/2026 Academic Year

School of Medical Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (SMS-KNUST), invites applications for the Graduate Entry Medical Program (GEMP) for the 2025/2026 academic year.
- Overview of the Programme:
The Graduate Entry Medical Program (GEMP) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is designed for individuals with a first degree in biomedical-related fields. The program aims to provide students with the requisite medical knowledge and skills to become competent medical professionals. The program is structured in two phases: the pre-clinical component and the clinical component, ensuring that students receive a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of medicine.
- Pre-Clinical Component: 3 semesters of 16 weeks each.
- Clinical Component: 3 years of clinical training in various healthcare settings.
Upon completion, graduates will be awarded the MBChB degree, preparing them for roles within both the public and private healthcare sectors in Ghana and beyond.
- Nature of the Programme and Duration:
The GEMP is an intensive, full-time program designed to equip students with the essential medical knowledge and practical skills required to become medical practitioners. The program consists of:
- Pre-Clinical Component: This part of the program includes foundational medical courses in subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and others. It lasts for three semesters (16 weeks each).
- Clinical Component: After successfully completing the pre-clinical component, students will enter the clinical phase, which lasts for three years. During this phase, students will gain hands-on experience in hospitals and other clinical settings.
- Entry Requirements
- First Degree
Applicants should have a good BSc Degree in the following Biomedical-Related programmes:
Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Dietetics, Food Science and Technology; Herbal Medicine, Medical Laboratory Technology/Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physician Assistantship, and Optometry. AND
- SSSCE/WASSCE: Candidates should have at least credit passes (A1-C6/A-D respectively) in the following Three (3) Core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science, plus credit passes (A1-C6/A-D) in relevant Three Elective subjects. OR
GCE ‘A’ Level: Candidates should have at least credit passes in Five (5) subjects at the GCE ‘O’ Level (or its equivalent), including English Language and Mathematics plus at least Three (3) credit passes in the relevant subjects at the Advanced Level. OR
- Other Qualifications: International candidates and all others who have any of the above qualifications or their equivalent from an accredited/recognized institution may apply. Applicants from French-speaking countries must in addition to the Minimum Requirement, provide a minimum of one-year English Proficiency Certificate.
- Additional Requirements: Candidates must pass the Access Course examination. Successful candidates will undergo a selection interview.

- Complete the online application form by providing the necessary personal, academic, and contact details.
- Upload all required documents, including academic transcripts, certificates, and a valid identification.
Access Course
Shortlisted applicants will be published on the KNUST website. Shortlisted applicants only may apply for the access course. Applicants are to pay Three Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢3,000.00) for the Access Course, Examination, and Interview. Applicants should check their eligibility and proceed to pay at the Bank.
The Access Course covers English Proficiency, Quantitative Methods, Biological Chemistry, cellular and Molecular Biology, Anatomy Physiology Microbiology and others.
The course will take place at the School of Medical Sciences, KNUST from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day. At the end of access course, candidates will write an examination to be organized by the SMS Graduate Entry into Medicine (SMS- GEM) Secretariat. Successful candidates will then attend a selection interview to qualify for admission.

Eligible applicants are to submit the following documents during the interview
- Two recent endorsed passport-sized photographs,
- Two endorsed Recommendation Letters from 2 Referees from a relevant Academic Institution,
- Copy of Certificates (SHS & Degree),
- Original Transcript,
- a copy of recent past six (6) months bank statement and other financial instruments as proof of ability to pay including addresses and Letters of support from Sponsor(s) undertaking to pay all fees.
NB: A prior national service will not be a prerequisite for admission since prospective graduates will be required to undertake housemanship training after completion of the programme.
