Class of 1982 donates commemorative plaque to School of Medical Sciences

The class of 1982 of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has donated a commemorative plaque to the School to mark its 50th anniversary.
The plaque was presented to the Dean of the School, Prof. Akwasi Antwi-Kusi, and the Registrar, Mr. Christopher Addo, by alumni and former deans, Prof. Kwabena Danso and Prof. E. Tsiri Agbenyega.
The presentation recognizes the pioneer cohort who completed their full clinical training at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The gesture also forms part of efforts to document and preserve the school’s history as it commemorates five decades of medical education.
“The purpose of the donation of the plaque to the school is for historical reinforcement of the activities of the 50th anniversary,” said Prof. Antwi Danso.
He explained that the donation is meant to honour the service and dedication of the pioneer students who completed clinical training at KNUST and KATH.
The class of 1982 began their medical education in 1976 and were the first group to undertake the full clinical programme at KATH.
“During that time, we were 25. And interestingly, it was an all-male class starting from the first year, 1976, and completing the clinical training,” he stated.
Reflecting on the development of the school over the years, Prof. Antwi Danso noted, “A lot has changed. But we are proud to say that we paved the way, and the changes that we see today are going in the right direction in terms of infrastructure, staff, and output.”
He emphasized the broader impact of the school’s graduates, stating that alumni from the School of Medical Sciences are serving in healthcare institutions both locally and internationally, contributing to the health sector in various capacities.
“KNUST School of Medical Sciences is well known worldwide, and our products are found everywhere in the world. And indeed in the country, I would say that our contribution to healthcare in Ghana has been tremendous,” he noted.
