Job Title: AIMPact Research Intern – AI in Healthcare

Location: Kumasi, Ghana (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology - KNUST)
Reports to: Internship Supervisor/Research Lead
Employment Type: Full-Time, Internship (6 months)

 

Overview:

The AIMPact Research Intern will support the AI-Integrated Maternal Preeclampsia Detection and Care Transformation (AIMPact) Project by contributing to research and development of AI-driven solutions for early detection and management of preeclampsia. This internship provides hands-on experience in applying AI technologies to healthcare challenges, with a focus on wearable devices, data analysis, and clinical outcomes. The intern will assist the research team in data collection, analysis, and modeling to enhance maternal healthcare services in Ghana.

This role is ideal for students or recent graduates with an interest in artificial intelligence, healthcare technology, and maternal health.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Data Collection and Management:
    • Assist in collecting physiological data from wearable devices (e.g., PPG sensors) used to monitor pregnant women at risk of preeclampsia.
    • Organize and manage clinical records and datasets for further analysis.
    • Ensure accuracy and quality control of collected data, adhering to ethical standards and data management protocols.
  2. Data Analysis and AI Model Development:
    • Support the research team in analyzing PPG data and integrating it with clinical records to improve AI-based preeclampsia prediction models.
    • Assist in the development and validation of AI algorithms for risk prediction, under the guidance of senior researchers and data scientists.
    • Use statistical tools and machine learning techniques to process and analyze data for insights on maternal health outcomes.
  3. Research and Literature Review:
    • Conduct literature reviews on AI applications in healthcare, preeclampsia detection, and wearable technology.
    • Stay updated on latest research trends in maternal healthcare and AI to support ongoing project activities.
    • Assist in writing reports and summarizing findings for publication or internal use.
  4. Collaborating with Healthcare Professionals:
    • Work with healthcare professionals at KNUST and participating clinics to understand clinical workflows and requirements for implementing AI solutions.
    • Participate in meetings with doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers to gather feedback on the project’s progress and potential areas for improvement.
  5. Supporting Research Publications and Presentations:
    • Assist the team in preparing research papers and conference presentations on project findings and AI innovations in healthcare.
    • Contribute to drafting research reports, documenting methodologies, and presenting results for peer-reviewed publications.
  6. Project Support and Administration:
    • Help with organizing and coordinating workshops, training sessions, and meetings as part of the project’s capacity-building efforts.
    • Provide administrative support to the research team by maintaining records, managing schedules, and assisting in event planning.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education:
    • Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, or related fields.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interest in artificial intelligence, data science, and healthcare technology.
    • Basic understanding of machine learning techniques and data analysis tools (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB).
    • Familiarity with statistical analysis and data management techniques.
    • Excellent research and writing skills, with attention to detail.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with healthcare professionals and research teams.

 

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience with wearable technology and biosensors is an advantage.
  • Previous experience in clinical data collection or working in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic knowledge of maternal health issues, particularly preeclampsia, is desirable.
  • Familiarity with ethical standards and practices in handling patient data.

 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Completion of at least 2 research projects related to AI applications in maternal healthcare by the end of the internship.
  • Contribution to data analysis and AI model development for preeclampsia risk prediction, documented in research reports.
  • Participation in at least 1 publication or presentation on AI healthcare innovations.
  • Successful support of the team’s data management, ensuring the accuracy and quality of the collected data.
