CHS holds Continuous Professional Development workshop for all Academic Staff

The College of Health Sciences on 2nd March 2022 held a Continuous Professional Development workshop for all Academic Staff in the College Board room “Dealing with Stress and Anxiety in Academia.

Continuous Personal Development (CPD) Programmes aim to help professionals to be abreast with relevant practices and information to furnish the staff in their area of specialization.

Dr. Emmanuel Ameyaw, Chairman of the CPD Committee in his welcome address indicated that this workshop and other pending ones will be accredited by regulatory policy. He urged all the participants at the workshop to be fully involved in all the activities and affirmed that the workshop will be beneficial to everyone.

Professor Christian Agyare the Provost of CHS in his remarks thanked the Continuous Personal Development Committee for their efforts in making the maiden edition of this series of workshops a reality. He also highlighted that the College has a lot of professionals who are required to renew their license annually. “The College realized that we have all the resource persons, hence can come up with our CPD workshops at a cheaper rate,” he said. Professor Agyare also recounted that the CPD workshops will help the staff refresh themselves with new ideas and information to be used in all endeavors. He also said that based on the outcome of this workshop, it can be escalated to the University level. Professor Agyare then revealed that the CPD Committee has the support of the Provost’s Office and urged all participants to get the necessary certificates given at the CPD workshops for their license renewal and promotions.

Dr. Ruth Owusu Antwi, the Head of the Psychiatry Department at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital was the facilitator of the workshop. She defined stress as a physical, mental or emotional response to events that causes bodily or mental tension. Dr. Owusu Antwi revealed that when we feel under pressure the nervous system instructs our bodies to release stress hormones including adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. “These produce physiological changes to help us cope with the threat we see upon us” she added. Dr. Owusu Antwi further highlighted some common signs of stress, its complications and strategies to deal with stress. She urged all the participants to have a good sleep, always be kind and gentle with others, develop mutually supportive relationships and applying effective time management skills as a means to deal with stress.

The participants expressed their general satisfaction of the whole workshop and indicated how timely and beneficial the information they have received will be in their day-to-day activities.
