A delegation from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, visited the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on March 3, 2025, to explore opportunities for academic and research collaborations.

 

The delegation was led by Associate Professor Hiroko Iwata, Chair of the International Affairs of the Graduate Program of Nursing Science and the Chair of International Relations at the College of Nursing. Other members included Professor Ryota Ochiai from the School of Medicine, Assistant Professor Kana Ohkawa, and Adom Seth, a doctoral student at the University.

Established in 1973, the University of Tsukuba is renowned for its emphasis on research and innovation, with a student population of approximately 17,000. The primary purpose of their visit was to discuss mutual research interests, identify opportunities for educational partnerships, and explore potential student exchange programs, especially in the field of Health Sciences.\

 

The delegation was warmly received by Professor Christian Agyare, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences. He provided an overview of the College and expressed KNUST's commitment to nurturing meaningful international collaborations.

 

Among those present at the meeting were Professor Mrs. Veronica Millicient Dzomeku, Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery; Professor Victoria Bam, Vice-Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery; Professor Yeetey Enuameh, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Professor Peter Agyei-Baffour, Dean of the School of Public Health; Professor Sam Newton from the School of Public Health; Mr. Hayford Isaac Budu, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Nursing; and Mrs. Yvonne Baiden, Senior Assistant Registrar and International Programmes Officer.

Professor Agyare expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the potential for staff and student exchanges as well as collaborative research. He assured the delegation that efforts would be made to formalize the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to make the collaboration effective in the near future. The entire College expressed their appreciation for this exciting opportunity, reaffirming KNUST's strong commitment to fostering international partnerships.
