The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) College of Health Sciences, on 12th March 2026, hosted a delegation from Imperial College London (ICL) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international research collaboration and promote knowledge exchange.

The visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to explore potential areas for joint research, academic exchanges, and expanded collaboration. Discussions focused on understanding the research priorities of the College of Health Sciences and identifying areas where researchers from both institutions could work together on high-impact and innovative projects.

Leading the delegation was Prof. Majid Ezzati, Academic Director for Imperial Global Ghana, and Prof. Amma Boakye-Danquah, Associate Director at Imperial Global Ghana. According to the delegation, the visit was primarily aimed at building connections with researchers at KNUST and identifying areas where both institutions could work together to advance research and innovation.

Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Amma Boakye-Danquah noted that Imperial College London is currently exploring several thematic areas that could form the basis for collaboration with KNUST.

“One of the areas we are looking at is drug discovery and diagnostics,” he said, adding that the collaboration will also focus on translating research outcomes into innovations and new technologies that can address pressing global health challenges.

Biotechnology was highlighted as another key area of interest, alongside research into electronic waste management and the circular economy, which focuses on sustainable recycling and reuse of materials.

Other areas discussed during the engagement included fellowship opportunities for early-career researchers, model short courses, technological support for biobanking, and student entrepreneurship funding programmes aimed at nurturing innovation among young researchers.

The Provost of the KNUST College of Health Sciences, Prof. Christian Agyare, welcomed the initiative and expressed the College’s readiness to support and strengthen the partnership.

“That would be very good. We are prepared to bring the College together. Whatever initiative you want to pursue, you are welcome to come to KNUST,” he said.

Prof. Agyare also introduced the Imperial delegation to the Schools and Faculties within the College of Health Sciences and highlighted the College’s mission, core values, and commitment to advancing health research, training, and community impact.

Representatives from the College who participated in the meeting included Prof. Akwasi Antwi-Kusi, Dean of the KNUST School of Medical Sciences; Prof. Yaw Amo Wiafe, Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences; Prof. Linda Batsa Debrah, Director of the GWAC; Prof. Benjamin Emikpe, Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Philemon Adoliwine Amooba, Vice Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery; Mr. Jamil Ibrahim, College Finance Officer; and Mrs. Regina Nuako, College Registrar.

The engagement marks an important step toward strengthening global partnerships and fostering collaborative research initiatives that can contribute to scientific advancement and improved health outcomes.
