The Department of Herbal Medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has recognised Dr. Ebenezer Agyemang of the Ebenage Group of Businesses for his outstanding dedication to promoting herbal medicine research and entrepreneurship. The honour was conferred on 31st October 2025 during a brief but heartfelt ceremony at the Department.

The recognition follows the Department’s call for support toward cutting-edge undergraduate research, a call Dr. Agyemang responded to with remarkable generosity. Head of Department, Professor Samuel Asare Nkansah, expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Agyemang’s contribution, applauding his commitment to fostering academic excellence and innovation. Other departmental heads also lauded the initiative, describing it as a significant boost to student research and a positive turning point for the faculty.

Dr. Agyemang, himself a proud graduate of KNUST’s Herbal Medicine programme, pioneered the establishment of the Herbal Medicine Research Awards, an annual sponsorship package dedicated to supporting innovative undergraduate projects with entrepreneurial potential. In its maiden year, he committed GHȼ15,000 to fund five young researchers whose proposals met the selection criteria.

Among the beneficiaries was Gilbert Yaw Sonny, whose project on Utilization of Orange and Pineapple peels together with other natural ingredients in the production of mosquito coils emerged as the top proposal. The support enabled him to refine his research further and contribute to practical, locally relevant solutions.

Impressed by the success and impact of the first cycle, Dr. Agyemang has pledged GHȼ30,000 to support the 2025/2026 academic year of the awards. He noted that the initiative aims to empower young researchers to produce groundbreaking innovations that elevate the field of herbal medicine and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Dr. Agyemang reaffirmed his hope that the awards scheme will continue to inspire students to think creatively, innovate confidently, and champion the growth of herbal medicine in Ghana and beyond.
