KNUST Faculty of Allied Health Sciences Organizes Two-Day Orientation for Teaching Staff on PBL i

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has organized a two-day workshop for its Teaching Staff on the implementation of Problem-Based Learning, an initiative being embraced by the College of Health Sciences to improve teaching and learning.

The two-day program came off on the 23rd and 24th of January 2025 at the Anita Hotel, Kumasi. Professor Alexander Yaw Debrah, the Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences noted in his welcome address that the organization of the program is a move to embrace PBL as an important way of training Health Science Students in these modern times. He also asserted that the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) in line with implementing PBL, has set up a committee to aid in the success of the Program in the Faculty. He also noted that the PBL is being brought up to help the students be better at learning because of its positive outputs

Professor Isaac Ayensu, the PBL Coordinator for the College of Health Sciences, KNUST, provided an overview of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) describing it as a student-centered approach where learning revolves around authentic and real-world problems and also, encourages collaborative learning. He affirmed the implementation of PBL will make students better at communication, solving problems, and critical thinking. Prof. Ayensu highlighted the roles of the teaching staff who will be the facilitators and detailed the various factors that contribute to the PBL’s successful execution.

During the orientation, the teaching staff were taken through the roles and responsibilities of being the facilitators of the PBL at the session and were also given an overview of scenario writing for PBL sessions by Dr. Ivy Ofori Boadu and Prof. Yaw Amo Wiafe respectively.

Overall, the two-day orientation provided comprehensive information and training on PBL to the Faculty members equipping them with the necessary knowledge to thrive as PBL is being fully embraced by the College of Health Sciences.
