The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Medical Sciences (SMS) has planted over 300 seedlings at the medical enclave in Boadi as part of the pre-anniversary activities leading up to its 50th anniversary.

The planting included a range of tree species such as Terminalia mantaly, Millettia thonningii, Bauhinia, Brahea, Coconut, Pear, Soursop, Guava, and Passion fruit.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Wireko Brobbey, a founding member of the School of Medical Sciences and former dean, donated 200 of the seedlings to support the tree planting initiative.

During the event, Prof. Akwasi Antwi Kusi, the Dean of the School of Medical Sciences, spoke about the importance of the activity.

This year marks 50 years since the establishment of the School of Medical Sciences. We are looking forward to the next 50 years, and that is why our first-year students are here. We hope they will be part of another 100-year celebration.

“The first-year students are planting trees today, and we are keeping a record of their names. In 50 years, we will look back at the records and see how many trees have survived,” he said.

The tree-planting is one of several events leading up to the School of Medical Sciences Golden Jubilee.

Students were assisted by senior faculty members in planting the trees, with many students participating in the event, marking an important step in the preparations for the anniversary celebrations.

Prof. Christian Agyare, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, encouraged the first-year students to care for the trees they planted.

"What we’re doing today is important. You are making a commitment, and it’s your responsibility to sustain it. Always remember to water and care for your plant," he adviced.

The official 50th anniversary launch is scheduled for April 3, 2025.
