KNUST Welcomes Prof. Alexander Debrah After Prestigious Global Award

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has welcomed Professor Alexander Yaw Debrah following his selection as the 2025 recipient of the EDCTP Dr. Pascoal Mocumbi Prize.
Prof. Debrah, recognised for his groundbreaking research in neglected tropical diseases, presented the award to the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, in a symbolic gesture of appreciation to his alma mater and academic home.
Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, accompanied Professor Debrah, his wife, Dr. Linda Batsa Debrah, and other senior members of the College to the Vice-Chancellor at the Council Chamber.
Professor Dickson commended him for the international honour and highlighted the growing global impact of KNUST’s research community.
“We are proud of what our researchers continue to do to put the name of KNUST on the global stage,” she said. “It’s not just about recognition, but about rigorous research that solves real-world problems. Your work in filariasis and clinical trials is a testament to that.”
Prof. Debrah expressed his appreciation to the university’s leadership for fostering a supportive academic and research environment.
“I work in an area that is often neglected. Yet KNUST has provided an enabling and conducive environment for research,” he said.
He added that the visibility of the award could inspire the next generation of scientists to take interest in neglected tropical diseases, a field often overlooked both in terms of medical priorities and funding.
“I hope this award will encourage young scientists to pursue research in this area,” he said.
As part of his appreciation, Prof. Debrah announced a donation of GHS10,000 to the College of Health Sciences’ Endowment Fund to support research and academic initiatives.
