The College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology (CHS-KNUST) on September 11, 2024, hosted journalists at a media soiree at the Alisa Hotel in Accra to announce the mission and vision for the establishment of the endowment fund.

The College of Health Sciences Endowment Fund will raise 10 million dollars in five (5) years to enhance the training of high-quality health professionals, conduct relevant health research, provide scholarships for graduate and undergraduate training, and procure necessary equipment.

Additionally, it will prioritize creating opportunities to retain health science graduates to address some of the developmental challenges faced in the country’s health sector.

Professor Daniel Ansong, the chairman of the CHS Endowment Fund Committee mentioned that the number of applicants has been increasing annually, with many qualified individuals applying for degrees but only a small portion being admitted.

He highlighted the lack of necessary infrastructure as a major obstacle in training more health professionals. “As a nation with a very high health worker-to-patient ratio, one will have thought that more health personnel would be trained to augment the shortfalls that have existed over the years,” he explained.

Professor Ansong emphasized the importance of expanding facilities to accommodate a larger number of students, as seen with the completion of the Boadi Medical Village, which resulted in a significant increase in admissions.

He stressed the importance of addressing this issue to ensure that healthcare professionals are trained based on qualifications rather than financial status. “We need to come out of this, that is why we are calling on everyone to support the Endowment fund established by the College,” he rallied.

Felix Selormey Kwaku Agbeve and Jeffery Ohene Dokyi, representatives from Matrex Ghana Limited, the fundraising partners for the endowment fund made a presentation on the activities to the media on activities they have outlined to champion this course.
