Celebrating Prof. Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah: The First Ghanaian Deaf Associate Professor at KNUST
The College of Health Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), proudly celebrates the academic achievement of Prof. Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah, who has recently been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in Disability and Rehabilitation Studies. This remarkable achievement not only marks a milestone in his professional journey but also establishes Prof. Mprah as the first Ghanaian deaf professor, a historic moment that continues to inspire perspectives on disability and academic excellence.
Prof. Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah’s academic journey began at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana where he earned his Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Arts in Geography. His passion for disability studies led him to further his education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, where he obtained a PhD in Disability Studies. This diverse academic background has been instrumental in shaping Prof. Mprah’s unique perspective on the intersection of geography, education and disability.
Over the years, Prof. Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah has established himself as an accomplished scholar, with more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized journals. He serves as a reviewer for several prestigious academic journals, including the African Journal of Disability, the British Journal of Visual Impairment, the International Journal of Inclusive Education and the International Journal of Social Work.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Prof. Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah has been an influential advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities in Ghana and beyond. He is a dedicated member of the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) and the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD) where he has played a vital role in shaping policies and practices that improve the lives of persons with disabilities. Prof. Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah’s involvement with the GFD has been very impactful. He served on the National Advocacy Committee of the GFD, advocating for better policies, services and resources for people with disabilities.
