Professor Veronica Millicent Dzomeku: Ghana’s First Full Professor in Midwifery

Professor (Mrs) Veronica Millicent Dzomeku, Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has made history by becoming the first person in Ghana to achieve Full Professorship in Midwifery. This milestone marks an exceptional achievement in her distinguished career and the field of midwifery in Ghana.

Professor Dzomeku’s journey into nursing and midwifery began in 1993 when she worked as a midwife at the Ho Government Hospital. Her passion for maternal health led her to become a midwifery tutor at the Midwifery Training School in Kumasi in 2000. She continued her academic growth at the University of Ghana, where she obtained her BSc and MPhil degrees between 1997 and 2005. She was recognized as the best student in the College of Health Sciences.

In pursuit of further academic excellence, Professor Veronica Millicent Dzomeku earned her PhD at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, from 2013 to 2017.

In 2017, Professor Veronica Mensah Dzomeku was selected as one of the University of Michigan’s African Professional Scholars for a four-month residency program in Michigan, USA. This international recognition showcased her growing influence in maternal health.

In 2018, she received the Emerging Leader Award for her project, “Changing the Culture of Disrespect and Abuse in Maternal Care in Kumasi, Ghana.” The project, supported by a grant worth $480,000 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), aimed to address critical issues in maternal care in Ghana.

Professor Dzomeku has a deep interest in maternal care and her work is dedicated to improving maternal health outcomes in Ghana and Sub-Saharan Africa. She has published over 20 research papers on topics related to maternal health and she continues to lead in this area with a focus on ensuring respectful and safe maternal care.

Her work has earned her the role of reviewer for several prominent academic journals, including the Nursing and Midwifery International Journal (NUMID), the Nigerian Journal of Nursing, and the Ethiopian Journal of Health Sciences.

Becoming Ghana’s first Full Professor in Midwifery is a monumental accomplishment for Professor Dzomeku, one that reflects her dedication to advancing nursing and midwifery in Ghana.
