ABOUT THE PROJECT

The German-West African Centre for Global Health and Pandemic Prevention (G-WAC) is a research and training center hosted by the College of Health Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. 

The Centre seeks to strengthen research excellence, academic collaboration, and institutional capacity through effective financial stewardship and sound project management for better data, better analytics, and better decisions in West Africa through interdisciplinary research, capacity building, and policy engagement in global health and pandemic preparedness. 

 

To support the successful implementation of G-WAC the Centre invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Project Accountant.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES

The Project account officer will be responsible for the day-to-day financial management of ensuring that all financial transactions are executed in accordance with DAAD funding regulations, institutional financial policies, and applicable statutory requirements. The finance officer shall work closely with the KNUST College of Health Sciences finance and administrative departments towards ensuring compliance with KNUST and the funder’s policies.

Activities will include but not limited to the following:

  • Support project start-up, implementation, and closeout activities.
  • Manage project finances, including budgeting, cash flow, invoices, payments, expense tracking, and financial forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with funder regulations through strong financial controls, reporting, budget reviews, and oversight of grants, procurement, and sub-awards.
  • Provide financial support to partner institutions, reconcile sub-grantee expenses, and support project reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS/PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

The Post holder should have the following: (E = Essential; D = Desirable)

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration (Accounting option), or a related discipline from a recognized institution (E).
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ relevant professional experience in project accounting, grant management, or donor-funded project financial administration (E).
  • Demonstrated experience managing donor-funded projects, preferably funded by DAAD, GIZ, Erasmus+, the European Union, or other international development partners(E)
  • Professional accounting qualification (ACCA, CPA, CIMA, ICA, or equivalent) or active progression toward certification will be an added advantage (D).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and computerized accounting systems (E).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (E).
  • High standards of integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and attention to detail (E).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and financial reporting skills(D).
  • Familiarity with higher education or research administration (D).
  • Experience supporting international collaborative research projects (D).
  • Ability to interpret donor financial regulations and ensure compliance (D).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to in a multicultural teams (D).
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and time-management skills (D).

Terms of Appointment

The appointment is project-based and subject to the terms and conditions governing the DAAD-funded project. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of project funding.
