Dalhousie University Pays Courtesy Call on Dean of Medical School to Strengthen Collaboration with KNUST

A two-member delegation from Dalhousie University’s Department of Psychiatry paid a courtesy call on Prof. Akwasi Antwi Kusi, Dean of the School of Medical Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to discuss a growing collaboration to enhance medical training in psychiatry.
The visit, led by Prof. Vincent Agyapong, head of the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University, underscored the shared commitment to improving psychiatric education and healthcare in Ghana.
The collaboration, which involves the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, will focus on training psychiatrists in subspecialty areas.
These trained professionals will return to train medical students at KNUST and residents at the Ghana College.
According to Prof. Vincent Agyapong, “the initiative is expected to benefit both institutions by improving the quality of medical education and enriching the clinical expertise of future healthcare providers”.

During the visit, discussions also explored the possibility of sending Dalhousie residents to Ghana for training in transcultural psychiatry, with the aim of deepening mutual learning and furthering the bilateral relationship.
Prof. Agyapong emphasized the potential impact on patient care in Ghana, noting that better-trained psychiatrists would address the country’s diverse mental health needs.
The partnership between Dalhousie and KNUST is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between institutions in Ghana and Canada.
Dalhousie University is already working with the University of Ghana Medical School through an existing memorandum of understanding (MOU), and plans are being made to establish a similar agreement with KNUST.
Long-term benefits for both institutions, the medical community, and patient care in Ghana.
