Nurse Managers Workshop – Bridging Academia and Practice: Strengthening Nurse Managers Role in Clinical Training of Nursing and Midwifery Students i

The School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoNM) successfully organized a workshop for Nurse Managers from the School’s affiliated institutions on March 4th, 2025, on the theme, “Bridging Academia and Practice: Strengthening Nurse Managers’ Role in Clinical Training of Nursing and Midwifery Students” at the School of Nursing and Midwifery conference room.

The workshop aimed to address the challenges faced by nurse managers and equip them with the necessary skills to enhance their efficiency in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare environment.

In her welcome address, Professor Millicent Veronica Dzomeku, the Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, expressed her gratitude to all participants of the workshop. She recognized the critical role nurse managers play in the training of future nursing professionals and emphasized the importance of the workshop in facilitating discussions on improving clinical training for student nurses. Professor Dzomeku also highlighted the significance of continuous learning for nurse managers, which is why the workshop is held annually to help them stay updated on new skills and methods in the field.

The workshop featured insightful presentations from various experts. Professor Felix Apiribu, Head of the Department of Nursing at SoNM, delivered a presentation on “Fostering Collaboration Between Academia and Practice for Quality Nursing and Midwifery Outcomes.”

He underscored the pivotal role nurse managers play in overseeing nursing staff, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, and managing departmental operations. He also discussed how nurse managers serve as vital links between nursing staff, healthcare administrators and other stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and the implementation of best practices in clinical settings. Professor Apiribu shared valuable strategies to enhance collaboration between academia and clinical practice, contributing to improved nursing and midwifery outcomes.

Mrs. Gloria Ofori-Atta, Clinical Coordinator at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, presented on “Nurse Managers' Roles in Clinical Training.” She highlighted three core roles of nurse managers: leadership, administrative duties, and clinical care. She also discussed the essential skills of a good nurse manager, acknowledging the challenges of the role but encouraging attendees to remain steadfast in their responsibilities.

The workshop closed with an assessment and evaluation of clinical practice, followed by a group discussion, ensuring that participants could reflect on the day’s learnings and explore practical solutions for improving clinical training.
