KNUST College of Health Sciences and University of Duisburg-Essen Explore Academic Collaboration
The College of Health Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday, 6th September 2024, held a meeting with a delegation from the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Ghana-NRW University Alliance. The meeting, which took place in the College Boardroom, focused on fostering academic cooperation and identifying areas of mutual benefit between the two institutions.
The delegation from the University of Duisburg-Essen was Simone Muller (International Relations Officer), Erwin Amann, Astriel Wiskndol, and Karen Shire, alongside Beatrice A. Barnieh, the sole representative from the Ghana-NRW University Alliance. In their remarks they explained their expectations from the collaboration, highlighting opportunities for joint research, student and faculty exchanges, and deeper academic partnerships.
In response, the Provost of the KNUST College of Health Sciences, Prof. Christian Agyare, warmly welcomed the delegation and stressed the importance of the possible partnership. He was enthusiastic about the opportunity for both institutions to benefit from sharing their resources and expertise. He went on to describe the organisational structure of the KNUST College of Health Sciences, noting that it is spread across multiple sites, namely the main campus, Boadi, and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, which serves as the main training site for final-year medical students. Prof. Agyare also mentioned that there are 27 other teaching sites for the College of Health Sciences.
Following the Provost’s remarks, the deans of the various schools and faculties under the College of Health Sciences presented their contributions to the discussion. The Dean of the School of Public Health (SPH), along with the Deans from the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), School of Medical Sciences, (SMS), Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FPPS), School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoNM), and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FPPS), each outlined their unique programs and areas of research interests. They explained their expectations for the partnership, including the possibility of collaborative research projects, joint faculty development initiatives, and expanded student exchange programs.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement on the potential benefits of the collaboration, with both sides expressing optimism about future joint ventures in healthcare education and research. The collaboration between the College of Health Sciences and the University of Duisburg-Essen aimed at improving both institutions' educational and academic capacities, extending KNUST's global reach and encouraging academic excellence in the health sciences field.
